Service Overview

In response to growing concerns about fire safety and regulatory compliance, Loros, a prominent hospice and care home, sought the expertise of Element, a leading fire safety solutions provider, to conduct a comprehensive Fire Compartmentation Survey and Fire Door Survey for one of their high-rise buildings. The primary objective of the study was to identify potential fire risks, evaluate the existing fire compartmentation, and assess the condition of fire doors throughout the building. Element’s team of experienced professionals undertook a meticulous assessment and subsequently executed a series of remedial works to enhance the overall fire safety measures.

Element’s highly skilled fire safety experts performed a thorough Fire Compartmentation Survey to assess the building’s compartmental design and identify any deficiencies that could exacerbate the spread of fire. Simultaneously, they conducted a detailed Fire Door Survey to evaluate the functionality and integrity of existing fire doors. The surveys revealed critical gaps in the fire compartmentation system and highlighted numerous issues with the fire doors, which demanded immediate attention to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.

With the survey results in hand, Element swiftly initiated the necessary remedial works. Their skilled technicians diligently sealed off gaps and breaches found within the building’s compartments, effectively preventing the uncontrolled spread of fire between different areas. Moreover, the team identified fire doors that were no longer fit for purpose and replaced them with certified, high-quality fire doors that met the required safety standards. These newly installed fire doors bolstered the building’s fire protection capabilities significantly, giving its occupants added peace of mind.

To further fortify the building’s fire resistance, Element proceeded to install advanced fire barriers strategically. The installation of these barriers effectively impeded the lateral spread of fire and smoke, ensuring that in the event of a fire, the risk of its escalation was substantially mitigated. The comprehensive approach to fire barrier installation not only safeguarded the building but also played a crucial role in protecting the lives of its occupants.

Challenges Faced

Undertaking our project at Loros, a live care home for individuals on end-of-life care, presented a unique set of challenges due to the sensitivity of the environment. While our work took place in the loft space, away from patient areas, we had to carefully design and establish a safe route in and out of the building through back-of-house areas to ensure the well-being of patients and staff. A critical concern was minimizing dust during our activities, as it could pose serious harm to the vulnerable patients. Consequently, our team took meticulous measures to contain and control dust, employing specialized equipment and procedures. All waste and debris generated were bagged up in the roof void before being safely removed and transported to a designated site skip outside the back-of-house area. Our commitment to safety and sensitivity throughout the project ensured that the care home could continue its essential services with minimal disruption and utmost care for the residents.
